What’s Special About the MDX’s AWD System?
The MDX doesn’t come with some run-of-the-mill all-wheel-drive system—it features Acura’s SH-AWD® (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™) system. Rather than indiscriminately split power between all four wheels, SH-AWD® does so variably and intelligently, adapting to driving conditions in real time.
SH-AWD® continuously evaluates the optimally distribution of power between the front and rear wheels based on a variety of factors, including speed, steering, and lateral G-force. In optimal conditions, the system maximizes efficiency by sending 90% of power to the front wheels; as conditions dictate, it’s able to transfer as much as 70% of available torque to the rear wheels.
Suffice to say, the 2017 Acura MDX AWD is a winner even if you’re tackling adverse road conditions—and you’ll be enveloped in luxury, too! In fact, Edmunds credits the SH-AWD® system with making the MDX “one of the sportier three-row SUVs on the market.”
